Bourn Airfield
Bourn Airfield is a historic second world war airfield that lies to the west of the settlements of Highfields and Caldecote, immediately south of the A428 trunk road (linking Cambridge with Bedford), to the north of the small settlement of Bourn, and to the east of the new settlement of Cambourne.
The historic use of the site as an airfield means that it does not have any natural vegetation and accordingly is very open in nature. The old concrete runways are still in place. The only developed parts on the site comprise aircraft hangers, industrial buildings and outside storage areas.
Bourn Airfield is currently a Civil Aviation Authority Licensed Airfield for pilot training and private aircraft use and storage. The famous Bank Holiday Monday Market is operated by Wendy Fair markets on this site, on one of the concrete runways.
Bourn Airfield is one of the sites being considered for development in the South Cambridgeshire District Council draft new Local Development Plan, with the potential to build a new village of up to 3,500 houses.
