Christmas Carols with African Flavour

Its the time of the year when the sounds of christmas carols fills the air, especially in the shops from about early November. Carol singing is my favourite christmas tradition. This means I end up finding myself in a christmas choir (or two), singing my heart out

I have written about my Christmas 2019 already, but decided to expand on the carol singing separately for the joy of it!

This year, I decided to bring something different to my christmas. I hankered after the times when I sang christmas carols to the rhythm of African instruments and especially drums. So I went rooting in youtube to see what I could find. And I found quite a lot.

Here’s a selection and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have done.

Twelve Days of Christmas

E lu agogo (Ring the bells)

E lu agogo (Ring the bells)

Gbo ohun awon angeli (Hear the angel voices)

There is a lot drum sections in this one which makes my feet rather restless. Also features a Yoruba chant praising God.

O Come all ye faithful – various medley

Ding Dong medley

The medley includes “Long time ago in Bethlehem”, “Deck the Hall”, “Go tell it on the Mountain”, “We want to wish you a Merry Christmas”, “O Holy Night”

“Ẹ Jẹ́ Ká Jọ Yọ̀” (Let Us All Rejoice)

Once in Royal David’s City

Little Drummer Boy

Betelehemu (Bethlehem)

This is a Nigerian indigenous carol sung by an American choir

There’s more where this all came from but I hope you have enjoyed this selection.

I would love to hear your feedback so do comment, and share with others.

Compliments of the season to you and yours.
