This time last week, I was all tired and drained, but elated at having achieved the objective of becoming a District Councillor. One week later, I’m here reflecting on the events of the week just gone. It has been extraordinary.
On Sunday, I met the other LibDem councillors in the group, and received a warm welcome as a newbie. Then began the task of working out the strategy to adopt for my work over the immedate months, and to prepare for the scheduled meetings. As a user of the web and social media for my normal business, the first task I undertook was to set up this website & blog, email, facebook and twitter profiles for the councillor. The details are as shown in the contact page. The setup continued into the week, but was largely finished on Monday afternoon.
On Monday saw me getting my feet back on the ground catching up with work, and preparing for my first official meeting. Being my first official day as Councillor, there was not time for much preparation, but I duly presented myself at the Toft parish council meeting. I appreciate the warm welcome I was given, and look forward to serving the Toft community.
Tuesday was busy, starting with an Induction training at the South Cambs offices. It was a very useful session, giving us new councillors a good overview of the interna workings, through the eyes of the Senior officers in the Council. There’s a lot of work that goes on in that building in Cambourne, and thanks to the Council for organising the training session. So much information…. its obviously going to take a while for all of it to sink in.
Wednesday saw me juggling a lot of balls, both my normal day to day activities and getting to grips with council work. Whoever said we could have a paperless office? They should come see my desk…. I also had to decide which of 3, nearly simultaneous meetings I was going to attend. Wish I could clone myself….
I attended two parish council meetings on Thursday. The first at Caldecote, and then after presenting a short report and discussing a couple of items, went on to Kingston parish council meeting. As I was a Parish councillor in Caldecote up till last week, I was already familiar with the other councillors. It was good to meet the Kingston Parish councillors and glad of the warm welcome I received.
Today went so quickly, spent mostly on catching up with yet more paperwork and a trip out to the Fenland town of March. The A141 is one road I do not like travelling on, and today was no exception. But, needs must, so we do.
TGIF.
