Following the relaunch of the South Cambs Tree Wardens Network scheme this is the first tree wardens newsletter with lots of useful information on Tree Management, Orchards, Tree Fungi and the search for Elm Trees
Tree Management
Does your Parish need some guidance on what the current best practice is for tree management? See the National Tree Safety Groups document ‘Common sense risk management of trees’ – freely available at https://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/FCMS024.pdf/$FILE/FCMS024.pdf.
If local householders need advice, a tailored guide is available at https://www.forestry.gov.uk/PDF/FCMS026.pdf/$FILE/FCMS026.pdf, called ‘Managing trees for safety’.
Orchards
Does your orchard need pruning maintenance this winter/spring? More information at http://www.applesandorchards.org.uk/images/Winter_Workshops_2017-18.pdf.
* Sat 20th Jan – Formative fruit tree pruning,
* Sun 21st Jan – Restorative fruit tree pruning.
Tree Fungi
Autumn is the best time to spot fungi growing on trees which may have implications for the structural integrity of the tree. The most helpful guide is ‘Fungi on Trees – An Arborists’ Field Guide’ available to purchase from The Arboricultural Association. More information at https://www.trees.org.uk/Book-Shop/Products/Fungi-on-Trees-An-Arborists-Field-Guide.
The Great British Elm Search
The Great British Elm Search is recording mature elm trees across the UK to build an accessible, public database that records the state of the elm population and potentially disease-resistant trees. Your help is needed to record mature elms and update the records, which are verified by a group of elm experts. More information at https://www.conservationfoundation.co.uk/elms/map.
