Black History Month 2020 Celebrations

Today is the start of Black History month, a time set aside for remembering all the Black people that contributed to the UK of today with their sweat and lives. We also are celebrating the achievements of our ancestors that came before us and those of us still here today.

It is fair to say the UK of today would not be what it is without our contributions past and present. The history of Black people in the UK goes way back to the Tudors and even further back to the Roman times. Unfortunately recent narratives white wash black history and paint a picture that is completely uncomplimentary to black people leading to racial discrimination.

Is racism widespread?

Yes it is. It is so bad that the system and structures of our society actually perpetuate the discrimination. It happens in health, education, leisure, business, employment. Undoing the centuries of damage will not be easy, but at least we are now talking about it.

So why are we now talking about Black History Month? It is largely due to the killing of George Floyd, a black man, by white Police officers in USA on 25th May 2020. This sparked worldwide protests against racism against black people.

So what can we do about it?

Racism is not new. It is just filmed more often, getting round the world with speed on social media. We can only get rid of racism if we learn to appreciate each other’s norms and cultures. And that is what Black History Month is all about. Presenting and educating the public about Black culture so that it can be understood, appreciated and shared.

I therefore encourage everyone to take some time to engage in the activities we have planned. Do share with friends and family too.
