How can drink cans turn into a satellite, jam jars into a window of a rocket ship, plastic drink bottles into football shirts and magazines into loo rolls? Was it Magic? Alien Forces? A Mad Scientist? Children can decide!
An exciting competition for children launches this week to celebrate the power of imagination and encourage Cambridgeshire residents to reduce and recycle as much as they can.
Organised by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership (RECAP) and supported by Amey to celebrate RECAP’s 20th Anniversary, the Recyclables Summer Challenge is open to all Cambridgeshire children who have just finished Years 3, 4 and 5. It runs from 8 July to 20 September.
To take part in “The Recyclables Summer Challenge – Space for Change”, children will have to use their imagination to create a story of how a drinks can, jam jar, plastic bottle or magazine can be recycled and transformed into something new.
The winning story will be made into an animated film and its author will be invited to take their whole class for an Animation Workshop and Activity Day at Amey’s Waste Management Park in Waterbeach. The second prize will be for the class that gets the most students entering and the class will be invited to an interactive Recycling Activity Day at Amey’s Waste Management Park in Waterbeach.
To accompany the competition and help spark ideas, there are tips available on www.recap.co.uk/spaceforchange and we are also running a series of free animation workshops with professional animators in Wisbech, Cambourne, Ely, Arbury and St Ives Libraries between 30 July and 2 August.
Bryony Rothwell, Waste Partnership Manager for RECAP said: “Recycling is easy and makes a huge difference in helping the environment and saving money. With a few simple steps, such as removing all food or liquid and putting items in the right bin, it also becomes a valuable resource to be transformed into something new.
“Our Recyclables Summer Challenge is a fun and engaging competition to get children to get creative with their recycling. Plastic, glass, paper and metal used in everyday items can be transformed in many interesting things like new packaging, bicycles, cars, flower pots, pipes and so much more.
“We want to hear all the most imaginative ideas from children of how one recyclable item becomes something entirely new. Possibilities are endless and the more fabulous the better!”
